Brewery introduction
Originally founded as Yamazakura Shuzo, the company obtained its whisky license in 1946. During Japan's period of rapid economic growth, the Cherry Whisky released during the whisky boom earned popularity as a northern powerhouse. However, the boom was short-lived, and barrels filled with whisky were left to rest deep in the aging cellar. Time passed, and in 2014, the whisky that had been quietly maturing at Sasanokawa Shuzo was released under the name "YAMAZAKURA." Having generously shared its "angel's share," it grew strong over time, transforming into an amber liquid that brings happiness to those who taste it. In the winter of 2016, a relocated building from the founding site began a new chapter as the Azumi Distillery. Because we cannot produce whisky in large quantities, we hope you will savor its individuality. The world is now captivated by an unprecedented boom in Japanese whisky, but when the excitement settles, what will truly matter is the passion for whisky-making and the love for the land where it is born.
