Brewery introduction
SUIGEI Brewing Co.,Ltd
The roots of Suigei Shuzo trace back to the Edo period, when it operated as a general goods merchant under the name "Aburaya Chosuke." The brewery began sake production in the Meiji era and was reorganized in 1969 as Suigei Shuzo Co., Ltd., launching the manufacturing and sales of the brand "Suigei." The name "Suigei" originates from the pen name "Geikai Suiko" used by Yodo Yamauchi, the feudal lord of the Tosa Domain, when writing poetry while drinking sake. The name likens himself to a whale floating in Tosa Bay, expressing the image of a whale inebriated by sake-a fitting symbol for Tosa's sake. From this, the two characters "Suigei" were adopted. Since then, Suigei has walked hand in hand with the rich food culture of Kochi Prefecture, refining its appeal as a meal sake. In 2018, the brewery opened a new facility, Tosa-gura, ensuring strict quality control for premium sake production. It also began offering brewery tours, tastings in an adjacent gallery, and sweets made with amazake and sake lees. Centered on the Suigei brand, the brewery continues to expand the culture of enjoying sake by proposing new lifestyle experiences that incorporate Japanese sake.
